REAL Women supports Russian "family values"

Harper campaigns to his cheering anti-gay base in Ottawa, April 2005 :
"Your beliefs, your values, our values, are the real Canadian values. And you know my position. You know the position of the Conservative Party of Canada. When elected Prime Minister at the next election, whenever that may be, we'll bring in legislation that will define marriage as the union of one man and one woman."
Well that was then, huh, Gwen?
Problem for you is Steve really really likes being PM. So he's cool with you helping him get elected and in return you got to help give out some medals and make the occasional ham and bigot sandwiches for the base

From the REAL Women newsletter, October/November 2011
Homosexuals Demand Changes to Criminal Code
Members of the homosexual community have also long been agitating for unrestricted sexual access to minors. This requires an amendment to the Criminal Code, which now prohibits pedophilia.
REAL Women press release , Aug 7 2013 :
Minister of Foreign Affairs, John Baird, has abused his position as a cabinet minister to impose his own special interests in the foreign countries of Uganda, Kenya and Russia.
He awarded $200,000 of Canadian taxpayers’ money by way of the Department of Foreign Affairs to special interest groups in Uganda and Kenya to further his own perspective on homosexuality.
[snip]
Last week, Baird admitted working extensively behind the scenes to prevent Russia from passing legislation designated to protect Russian minors from homosexual propaganda.
          [snip]
Gwendolyn Landolt, National Vice-President, stated, “Just who does John Baird think he is, using taxpayers’ money to promote his own personal agenda and endeavouring to set standards of the laws of foreign countries?  He argues that homosexual rights are a ‘Canadian value’, but this applies only to himself and his fellow activists and the left-wing elitists.  These are not conservative values and that of grass roots Canadians, who after all, pay the bulk of the taxes”.
Mr. Baird’s actions are highly offensive to conservative taxpayers.  He cannot and must not undermine other countries’ sovereignty and dignity, rooted in stable family structures and religious faith, in order to impose his own value system on them.
Is that stable family structures and religious faith enough for you?
Update : Apparently, Baird's office "has offered to meet with REAL Women representatives to clarify the government’s “principled position … against the suppression of fundamental freedoms around the world".
Oh please, please, let it be Baird who meets with them.

I'm curious how big this "REAL Women of Canada" group is. I saw less than 700 likes on facebook. There are more comments on your (fantastic) blog than their facebook page. So, my question, if you'd start "Creekside Women of Canada". Would your press releases get media coverage?

'Ya reckon baird will one day step from behind laureen's skirt to actually come out of the closet? Not that he'd add anything to my club, but it would be interesting for a reformaTory to actually take the plunge.

Excellent post, M'Lady, thanx! (Although I did rather prefer the "leed" you mentioned in your e!)

Michel's comment above has a lot of merit, don't you think? "Creekside Women of Canada" has a nice ring to it. Bet you could knock the knickers off the "REAL WoC", too . . . .

In response to West End Bob, I don't think the issue of Baird's sexual orientation is relevant here; it would only be so if he and his government were embarking upon an anti-gay crusade, in which case it would be important to expose him as a hypocrite.

Baird's sexual orientation would not be relevant but for the irony of it having been outed by one of his party's lifelong rightwing anti-gay supporter groups.
I'll bet this is ancillary support for those disgruntled Reform backbenchers.
Where does Landolt get her funding?

Michel : ;-) and aw shucks...
According to NaPo's Babs Kay today : "Gwen Landolt (who effectively is REAL Women)..."
Years ago a REAL Women membership figure of 50,000 was regularly bruited about, which IIRC, is about the same as the current audience for SunTV.

Bob : I think they pretty much already knocked their own knickers off here. Can't imagine Steve is happy about being outflanked on the right.

Lorne : Five years or so ago a lone print media journo turned up to a Galloping Beaver meet-up and was idly talking about outing Baird. We all jumped him on it.
We've had a rather civil if not always strictly observed tradition in Canada about respecting politicians' private lives as regards their sexual or religious persuasions so far, wouldn't you say?

Anon : Interesting point re backbenchers. Is REAL Women acting as proxy for them here? REAL Women was formed over opposition to access to abortion after all. Maybe the attack on Baird is because he is part of inner circle and an obvious target, if you're a nutter.

Funding. Landolt is funded by her husband, according to her. Interestingly though, she is now also President of Drug Prevention Network of Canada, which is an off-shoot of Drug Prevention Network of America. I wrote about them here and here regarding their loony opposition to InSite and to cancer patients being allowed access to marijuana.

Who is REAL Women of Canada?

I wrote about them nearly two decades ago, in Web of Hate. Here are some of the things you should know about them:

One of their directors was Rita Ann Hartmann, who led the Ottawa-based Northern Foundation. Hartmann’s husband Paul was a Ku Klux Klan and Western Guard leader; two of their sons were active in the neo-Nazi Heritage Front in the Ottawa area.
Hartmann maintained connections with neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups across North America, such as the Confederate Hammerskins, while simultaneously acting as a legal advisor to REAL Women of Canada. At one early REAL Women conference in Ottawa, Hartmann gave an anti-abortion speech.
Later on, Wolgang Droege, the founder and leader of the Heritage Front, told me: ”The Northern Foundation was the start of it all for the Heritage Front. From that point on, things really took off.”

Anon : If you're not WK, could you please use quotation marks when quoting other people's work in future? Thanks.
